WASHINGTON (WNEW) — The head of D.C. Public Schools says the firing of a well-known principal had nothing to do with his coming out at a Pride Day event earlier this year.
Pete Cahall revealed he was gay in front of hundreds of students at Wilson High School in June.
Cahall recently found out his contract will not be renewed because of low test scores.
In a letter to D.C. council members, he complained of an “adversarial relationship” with school leaders and says the decision to fire him is “arbitrary and capricious.”
Chancellor Kaya Henderson gave her first public response Monday and says the decision was not made lightly and it had nothing to do with Cahall being gay.
She says Cahall will not be offered another role within DCPS.
Cahall will stay on as principal through the end of the school year.
