New York Mourns Slain Officers as Police Force Bunkers Down

As New York mourns the loss of the two policemen gunned down over the weekend, the city’s Police Department (NYPD) has tightened security for officers.

Following the targeted shooting of Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, police officers have now been directed to only go on foot patrols in pairs, detectives have been told by their union head to go out in teams of three and sentries have been deployed outside station houses, the New York Times reports.

“Make sure officers are backing each other up at all radio runs,” said Lou Turco, the president of the Lieutenant’s Benevolent Association. “Your main job is to ensure the safety of yourselves and your officers.”

Thousands of unarmed volunteer auxiliary officers, who serve as the department’s eyes and ears in the community, have also had their patrols suspended.
